Week 2 Major Project Client-David Jones brief history

This week we were given our client for our major project as well as the brief for the assignment.

I was given David Jones, which I was happy about because it gave me the opportunity to improve my skills on some actual product.
As well as it offering much scope for the other aspects and components of the brief.

A brief history of David Jones Department store

• 1838 Founding store opened by Welsh born David Jones..His mission:

sell "the best and most exclusive goods" and to carry "a stock that embraces the everyday wants of mankind at large.

• 1877 Opened first department store based upon European concept.

• 1887 Store refurbished  and now had mail order department. This store also attracted eminent clientele based on their exclusivity up market profile. 

• 1899 Variety and quality featured in their Christmas stock campaign

• 1920 New land purchased on Elizabeth Street for new visionary store. This store was set to move the hub of retail activity to once what was considered a remote city location.

• 1938  Wartime proved challenging for the store as rations and supply were seriously compromised. Much of the retail space was requisitioned for Armed Forces use.

• 1947 David Jones further associated itself with quality, exclusivity and post war fashion by hosting French designer fashion parades.

• 1954 State banquet for Queen Elizabeth held at the David Jones Restaurant 

• 1959 Beginnings of nation wide expansion towards a growth of 35 stores. Exclusive food hall features in flagship store, as well as being exclusive retailer of many international fashion labels.
